The Truth About Telescope Power

Aperture, the diameter of the front opening on any telescope is the governing factor controlling power.

PLEASE don't be misled by camera store and chain store promotions
that advertise a 2.4 inch refractor as having 500 - 600 power.

THE MAXIMUM USEFUL POWER OF ANY TELESCOPE IS 60 POWER PER INCH OF APERTURE.
For Example:

a 2.4 inch ( 60 mm) telescope will go to 150 power
a 3.1 inch ( 80 mm) telescope will go to 180 power
a 4.0 inch ( 100 mm) telescope will go to 240 power
a 5 inch to 300 power, 8 inch to 480 power and so forth

When ever you exceed the maximum power for any telescope, you begin to lose clarity, definition, contrast and in some cases you could lose the ENTIRE IMAGE!!

Wherever you shop for a telescope, keep in mind the rule of thumb

60 POWER PER INCH OF APERTURE

You won't be misled and more importantly, you won't be disappointed!
